When non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and Disease Modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS), external devices (orthotics) and physical therapy are insufficient for a disorder of the foot or ankle, surgery may be needed as a last resort. Surgical options include procedures like bunionectomies, used to remove bunions or other foot and ankle deformities, as well as arthrodesis (or joint fusion) to relieve pain by eliminating the motion of a particular joint, and reconstructive surgery, which can manipulate the muscles and bones in the foot or ankle area to achieve desired results.
