Stephen W. Pournaras, Jr., MD, FAAOS
Dr. Stephen Pournaras is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon who has been practicing in the Northern Virginia area since 1986.
Dr. Pournaras is a general orthopaedist with a subspecialty in hand and upper extremity and treats patients of all ages. His subspecialty includes numerous upper extremity problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis of the thumb, lacerations of tendons and nerves of the hand, fractures of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder as well as disorders of the elbow and shoulder. Dr. Pournaras is well versed in arthroscopy of the shoulder; including rotator cuff repair, wrist, elbow and knee disorders and in Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release and Thumb Arthritis surgery.
Dr. Pournaras attended both undergraduate and medical school at the University of Virginia. He received his medical school diploma from the University of Virginia in 1980 and completed his internship and residency in Orthopaedic surgery at George Washington University Hospital. In 1986 Dr. Pournaras spent a year in Los Angeles, California as a Joseph Boyes Hand fellow specializing in surgery of the hand.
Dr. Pournaras is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He primarily practices at Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia where he has served as past chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic surgery.
